Jakub started Race 1 in twelfth position but lost some places in the first corners, finished the first split in seventeenth. Xaus and Lanzi soon fell, one after the other, ahead of him and on the fifth lap Michel Fabrizio tried to pass Ben Spies on the inside, but he unfortunately lost the front, Ben caught up in the incident and both eliminated from a fight in which they would surely have been protagonists. Max Biaggi gained from the situation, riding the rest of the race up front with no close rivals. Jakub Smrz also benefitted from the crash, gaining two more places to be up in ninth position by the ninth lap. Smrz’ race pace was on a par with that of the leaders and he soon caught the group consisting of Haga, Tamada and Haslam. Jakub followed the Kawasaki rider for a few laps until, on the 15th lap, on the final chicane, he managed to pass him, bringing him to seventh position. On the seventeenth lap Jakub passed Haslam when he committed an error to finish the race in sixth place overall.
Race 2
got under way and Spies, determined to make up for race 1, tried to immediately pull away. Jakub maintained eleventh position in the first stages of the race, with the group ahead of him made up of several riders all lapping within tenths of a second of each other. Having passes Leon Halsam, Jakub tried to overtake Byrne but it took him until the eleventh lap to do so. The Team Guandalini rider then looked to catch Corser on the BMW, studying him from behind before passing him on lap fourteen. Byrne followed Smrz on the Ducati 1198 for a few laps and the experience of the British rider combined with the deterioration of Smrz’ tyres meant that he gained back the place that Jakub had taken from him. Jakub thus concluded the race in ninth position.
Jakub Smrz
“Today was a positive day, I finished both race in the top ten despite starting so far back on the grid. In Race 1 I didn’t make a good start, losing a few places, but then lap after lap I made up some positions to finish the race in seventh place. In race 2 I made a better start but I wasn’t clean through the first corner and I’d soon slipped to eleventh. I did everything I could to move forward and for me it was very important to finish the race and take as many points as possible. It was a good weekend, having finished both races in the top ten, and now we take a break before getting back to work at Nurburgring.”
