Stiggy Racing Honda>> Haslam performs in Imola races, West looks for improvement

October 01 2009

Stiggy Racing Honda's Leon Haslam managed to put in great riding performances in both Superbike races at Imola in Italy today.

Starting from 10th place in race one, the Stiggy Racing Honda rider battled his way through the strong rider field claiming fifth place, a position he kept comfortably for most of the race. But on the ultimate lap in the very last corner Leon got passed by fellow Honda rider Ryuichi Kiyonari, leaving the man from Derbyshire to settle with a sixth place as final result. In race two Leon got off from his 10th place taking a steady seventh. As he was advancing further through the 21 lap race trying to regain his race pace after being pushed off the track numerous times by Jonathan Rea, Leon found it difficult catching up to the front runners as he had  already lost to much gateway in the process. Finally bringing home an eight place for himself and team had to be the final result at the Italian track today.

Stiggy Racing Honda's Anthony West managed a rocket start off his 15th place on the grid as he passed the start finish line in eight place on the first lap. The the(take out) Aussie got passed and pushed down to a 10th but was quickly on the pace again and regained his consistency. Kawasaki rider Joan Lascorz, who was in the lead, encountered problems with his machine leaking oil onto the tack causing a red flag on lap 10. In the restart Anthony moved up to row two starting from 8th place, didn't quite manage to get of his place as good this time and keeps his position. For most part  an undramatic race for the Australian, who took home eight points for his team in today´s race by taking an eight place finish.

Leon Haslam - Superbike - Race 1 - 6th, Race 2 - 8th:
"Yes, it was hard work out there today. The set-up was better in race two but we went with the wrong tyre for the second race, my decision because the temperature had gone up. Plus Johnny (Rea) put me across the grass about four times, and that cost us a lot of time. If we had worked together we could have got up to the back of the group that actually got to the podium. Eighth in race two was not the best of results, but sixth on race one was better. We have had a few issues this weekend, but we have overcome them and we were running as fast as the leaders in the mid-part of one race. All-in-all, we improved over the weekend."

Anthony West - Supersport - 8th:
"I'm not to sure what is going wrong with the set-up and through the two chicanes I was losing most of the time. It is two silly sections that held us up most. I'm obviously to slow for some reason and need to change something. I proved I can be fast, I just need to do that every time, every race. All we can do is to continue searching for the settings we've been looking for all year, to make me find that trust and confidence in the bike. Although we managed to improve over the weekend it was just not good enough. We need to keep up with what we have and focus on the future, everyone in the team has been working really hard we just got to turn it around."

Johan Stigefelt - Team Manager:
"Leon did a good job today and we finished in sixth in race one and eighth in race two. I don’t think he could have done a lot better with the settings we had. We must be happy with everything. We came here testing so we thought we could have had better, but the team had to deal with a lot of new things this weekend, and we are only half the size from before. Everybody in this team deserves every good result we get. Anthony was struggling a bit with feeling from the bike again, and we can’t get it to work every race. One race is good and then not, so it is confusing for everyone. But we don’t give up. I want to thank everyone for doing such a great job, and also to the guys at home watching. I know it is very difficult for them, because it is a difficult time for everyone. We will not give up and we will try very hard to keep going."
